Biography

Gene received her MFA from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and Tufts University, and her BFA from Massachusetts College of Art where she was the recipient of numerous awards and grants including the SMFA's prestigious Boit Competition for two years. She was chosen to represent the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, in the CAA exhibition, Selections from New England MFA Programs, 1995 ( curated by John Stomberg). Her solo exhibitions include Fort Point Artist Gallery, Quinsigamond Community College, Atlantic Union College, and University of Massachusetts, Lowell. Her work was selected for Chesterwood (95, 98), Small Works International, Works on Paper (curated by Jerry Saltz) , New England / New York / New Talent (UMass, Amherst) and New England / New Talent at the Fitchburg Art Museum in 2008. She was invited to participate in the multi-sited art show, Elements 2000 in New York City, and Ground Zero: 01, at 129 Lafayette, New York in August 2001. Gene's work has been included in many private collections as well as the corporate collections of Nokia and Watson Wyatt Worldwide. Her photography has been featured on numerous book covers and textbooks. For many years, she worked in visual merchandising, and then as a freelance photo stylist with clients including Brookstone, Agfa, LL Bean, and White Flower Farm. During a brief hiatus back into the medical world, Gene was the coordinator for a psychiatric unit and a manager in an elder health center. She is now in the studio full time, working in sculpture, printmaking, and painting.  She was the recipient of an Arts Worcester Materials Grant in 2014 to continue her work in Japanese woodblock printing, and again, in 2019 to explore connections between her 2D and 3D work.  She has been awarded artist residencies at the Vermont Studio Center and the Rusty Barn in California.
